Well, commercial fabric softeners are
simply surfactants that are positively charged. They are scented with powerful
artificial fragrances that leave residue on the fabric (and they can be very irritating to your nose and skin). They
attach to the fabric surface in order to reduce static. Additionally, the residue builds up after a period of time
and can leave your clothes dingy and yellow.
Tip: Never use commercial fabric softeners on
towels or fleece materials.
One thing my mother always told me is not to use fabric softener on
my towels because it prevents water absorption. It
also affects fabrics that are meant to keep moisture away from the skin. The fabric softener attaches itself to the
surface of these fabrics and they lose their ability to keep wetness away from the skin. So, to avoid this problem…….
you can make your own fabric softener that is completely natural and safe for ALL fabrics. It prevents static cling and removes any soap residue
that may be left in your clothes. And it will leave your clothes fantastically soft! It's economical, too!
Recipe for Home-Made Fabric Softener
- A strong plastic container
- 1 cup baking soda
- 6 cups distilled white vinegar
- 8 cups water
- (Optional) 10-15 drops orange or lemon essential oil (available at health food stores)
First, add the baking soda to the plastic container. Add 1 cup
of the water to start with, then SLOWLY
add the vinegar to the bottle. The vinegar and baking soda will fizz. Then add the rest of the water. Slowly
swirl and cover – you will need to vent the lid a few times.
Use 1 cup in your final rinse cycle for each
load.
